My Favourite Free Eco Swap

When it comes to making an eco swap here and there, I’m almost always game, but I’m always particularly pleased when I manage to make a swap that costs absolutely nothing to implement! Often, I find exciting new earth-conscious cleaning products, baby toys, or clothing brands to try, but it usually involves me having to buy something (even if it doesn’t cost much). Over the last few years, I’ve always had my eyes peeled for eco swap ideas that are free and will work well with my pace of life. Repurposing items is the best way of making free, environmentally conscious swaps, but this is by far my favourite…

Rags. Yep, you read that correctly, rags. All I do is get an old towel that’s looking a bit threadbare and tatty, and cut it up into smaller pieces with my fabric scissors. I know, it sounds utterly underwhelming, and I didn’t think much of it when I first started doing it, but now, I’m not sure where I would be without my rags!!

I keep a big wetbag full of dry rags near the sink so they’re always easily accessible. I generally cut them to the size of a facecloth, but obviously you can cut them to whatever size you need!

What I use them for

When it comes to the uses for my rags, the list is endless. Need to mop up a spillage? Grab a rag. The toddler needs their face wiping? That’s a job for a damp rag! The table needs spraying and wiping – you guessed it – rag! I use them as dishcloths sometimes too! Not only was it totally free to make my little pile of rags, it’s actually saved me money. I don’t ever need to buy kitchen roll any more because the rags do the same job, and more. When I’m done with them, I just throw them in the washing machine and they’re good as new in no time.

I think I’ve mentioned it before, my daughter also loves rags. She will pick one up and carry it about with her as a comforter!

I know it sounds like the most absurdly mundane thing to get excited about, but seriously, cut up an old towel and you’ll be amazed at how many uses it has, and how you don’t need to use kitchen towel any more!
