My Eco Journey with Twins
Hi! I’m Alex, and I’m a twenty-something first time mum to twins! I started off with an instagram account (@eco_friendly_twins, if you’re interested) but recently I’ve really missed writing, so here I am with a new blog.
I’ll start off by explaining what prompted me to pursue an eco-lifestyle.
A little over a year ago, I was heavily pregnant and trying to get things ready for the imminent arrival of not one, but two babies – a task easier said than done when your house is a building site! Amid the chaos, someone told me that I should contact the council and ask for another wheelie bin, as I would generate so much waste with twin babies.
The thought of generating so much rubbish horrified me, so I started to look into things I could do to reduce our waste. The first thing I looked into was cloth nappies; something that initially grossed me out, although I quickly came to see how great they are. There are countless groups on Facebook dedicated to cloth nappies, and I joined them all.
This was the starting point for me – I slowly learned about all the different nappies and how to use them, and about how there are cloth nappy libraries all over the country so you can ‘try before you buy’. People on the nappy groups were often talking about baby wearing, so I looked into that too. Next came ethical clothing, wooden toys, and the Montessori lifestyle, with lots of small, incidental eco swaps along the way.
So here I am with twins that are almost a year old, and a very different lifestyle to what I had a couple of years ago. I really hope that writing down my thoughts and experiences will be relatable to other mums out there, and I would love to connect with some other eco-conscious mums!
